Importance of Accurate Cost Calculation
When using Seller-Managed Shipping, accurately accounting for shipping-related costs ensures your item is priced correctly and helps protect you from unexpected expenses. Before listing an item on Chairish, please review the guide below, which will help you calculate the full cost of shipping to any destination within the Continental United States. This also helps ensure a smooth transaction and avoids unexpected out-of-pocket expenses after a sale.
We will not ask the buyer to subsidize any estimated shipping costs post-sale.
Weigh and Measure Your Packaged Item
Always weigh and measure your item after it has been fully packaged for shipment. Be sure to include:
- Boxes, crates, or pallets
- Padding and protective materials
Carriers calculate shipping based on the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight, so precise measurements are essential.
Calculate Shipping Costs
Use online rate calculators from major carriers such as USPS, UPS, FedEx, or DHL to estimate shipping costs.
When calculating, be sure to include:
- Package weight and dimensions
- Origin and destination ZIP codes
- Desired service level (standard, expedited, or freight)
- Shipping insurance covering the full value of the item, when applicable
Confirm that your estimate applies to any destination within the Continental United States.
Review Sales Tax Considerations
Sales tax requirements vary by state.
- Chairish may automatically calculate and collect sales tax in certain jurisdictions.
- Sellers should still understand how applicable taxes affect overall pricing and margins.

Add Packaging and Handling Costs
Be sure to include all materials and services required to prepare your item for shipment, such as:
- Boxes, crates, or pallets
- Bubble wrap, foam, or other protective materials
- Labels, tape, and packing supplies
- Labor or handling fees, if applicable
These costs are often overlooked but can significantly impact total expenses.
You can add this Shipping Charge separately under the 'Shipping & Packing' section of the listing form.
Add a Buffer for Cost Variability
Shipping costs may fluctuate due to:
- Fuel surcharges
- Carrier rate changes
- Weight rounding or reclassification
To account for this variability, add a 5–10% buffer to your estimated shipping costs.
Reflect the Total Cost in Your Item Price or Shipping Charge
Your final listing price should reflect the full cost of:
- Shipping
- Insurance
- Packaging and handling
- Applicable taxes
- Cost buffer
Please note that we do have a maximum shipping charge limit of $2,000. Kindly also note that shipping fees cannot be adjusted after a sale for any reason. We are unable to charge the buyer for any additional costs once the purchase has been completed.
